The use of the mother tongue in the ESL/EFL contexts has been and still is a hotly debated issue. In fact, those who have dared to use the students’ L1 in their teaching practice have been more often than not looked down on, and unreasonably labeled as traditional outdated teachers due to the fact that they do not embrace the state of the art approach: Communicative Language Teaching. In effect, Uruguay is not alien to this trend. That is to say, most teachers cater for a monolingual approach in their classrooms. â€Å"Nevertheless, the use of the mother tongue has displayed a remarkable resilience mainly on the part of those few who argue that the use of L1 is a legitimate pedagogical tool especially in an EFL environment, and claim that it deserves to be rehabilitated† (Widdowson et al.) This personal reflection sets out to investigate students and teachers’ use of mother tongue in educational settings and their perception of its use.
